Thundest (DM)
Sometimes, the hardest part of playing D&D is getting everyone in the same room at the same time. There are a number of quick cheats you can use to get around a player being absent when their character would not be. These include, but are not limited to:

1) Someone else runs them.
2) They just stand around and/or follow the party silently.
3) They act randomly, as determined by die rolls.
4) Their player communicates their wishes via text/shouting.
5) They get knocked unconscious.
6) They fall asleep until the player returns.
7) They become horribly sick.
8) A villain kidnaps them.
9) They go to visit with an old friend.
10) They have a doctor's appointment scheduled for the same time as the adventure.
11) They're possessed by ghosts.
12) They walk off a cliff and it takes them a long time to climb up.
13) They fall into a pocket dimension.
14) They left the oven on.
15) A dragon eats them.
16) A manticore eats them.
17) The party eats them.
18) They turn out to have been an evil sleeper agent all along, who was only pretending to be friends with the party.
19) They're actually a mimic; the real PC stayed home today.
20) The entire universe collapses into a black hole, and all future sessions are just "okay, roll to see how squished you are. Okay, that's 15+4+∞... you're super dead. Brad, your turn."

If you can't decide which of these to use, just roll for it every time a player is absent.
